Discover more about Matsūra Historical Museum

The Matsura Historical Museum, established in 1955, stands as the oldest museum in Nagasaki Prefecture. It's located in the beautifully preserved former residence of the Matsura clan, who held dominion over Hirado from the 11th to the 19th century. The residence itself has historical roots stretching back to the Kamakura Period (1192-1333), serving as both a living space and the administrative hub of the domain until those functions shifted to Hirado Castle. The current buildings, dating back to 1893, were donated to the prefecture in 1955, along with the family's extensive collection of heirlooms. Inside, visitors can admire grand samurai armor, intricately designed fusuma doors, delicate lacquer boxes, and a wealth of other household items and treasures. The museum also displays a variety of documents, maps, globes, ship drawings, and diagrams that shed light on the clan's interactions with international traders. Hirado was once a key port for trade with China, the Netherlands, Portugal, and England, and the museum reflects this global exchange. Visitors can also explore the serene gardens surrounding the residence and visit the Kanuntei tea house, where they can enjoy a traditional matcha tea set. The museum also features a café and gift shop. The Matsura family's legacy as naval warriors and their involvement in Nanban trade are highlighted, with exhibits showcasing valuable items acquired through these exchanges.
