Discover more about Sakurajima Volcanic Shore Lake

Sakurajima Volcanic Shore Lake, also known as Sakurajima Volcanic Shore Park, is a picturesque seaside park located on the western coast of Sakurajima, just a short walk from the Sakurajima Ferry Terminal. This park provides visitors with a unique opportunity to witness the raw beauty of an active volcano while enjoying a relaxing and scenic environment. Formed from the lava flows of past eruptions, the park features rugged volcanic rock formations and unique vegetation that has adapted to the mineral-rich soil. The park's main attraction is its long, naturally heated footbaths, where visitors can soak their feet in the warm, mineral-rich waters while taking in panoramic views of Kagoshima Bay and the smoking Showa Crater of Sakurajima. In addition to the footbaths, the park offers easy walking trails, including the Nagisa Lava Trail, which meanders through the lava fields along the shoreline. This trail provides a closer look at the volcanic terrain and offers informative displays about the geology and history of Sakurajima's eruptions. The Sakurajima Visitor Center is also nearby, providing educational exhibits about the volcano and its impact on the surrounding area. Sakurajima was once an island, but the massive lava flow from the 1914 Taisho eruption connected it to the Osumi Peninsula, creating the peninsula that exists today. The volcano is still highly active, with frequent minor eruptions that eject ash into the air. While access within 2 km of the craters is prohibited, the park offers a safe and accessible way to experience the volcano's power.
