Discover more about Ashikaga Orihime-jinja Shrine

Ashikaga Orihime-jinja Shrine, also known as Ashikaga Orihime Shrine, graces the slopes of Mount Orihime in Ashikaga City, Tochigi Prefecture. Founded in 1705, the shrine has been a guardian of Ashikaga's textile heritage for centuries. It is also revered as a shrine for matchmaking and industrial prosperity. The shrine is dedicated to the weaving kami Amenomihoko-no-Mikoto and Yachichihime-no-Mikoto. The two are enshrined at the Yakumo Shrine in Dori. As weaving involves entwining the warp and weft of yarn, the deities are known as the deities of marriage. The shrine is said to help visitors find love, work, and health. To reach the shrine, visitors can ascend the 229 stone steps of Otokozaka or take the gentler Onnazaka. The Onnazaka is framed by seven-colored torii gates, each representing a different virtue: connection, health, wisdom, studies, work, academic success, and leadership. The main shrine building is vermilion-lacquered and said to be modeled on the Phoenix Hall of Byodo-in Temple in Uji, Kyoto. The shrine and its surroundings have been recognized as a Lover's Sanctuary and a Japan Night View Heritage site. From the shrine grounds, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Ashikaga City, the Watarase River, and the Kanto Plain.
