Discover more about 中間ガジュマル

The Nakama Gajumaru is a striking banyan tree (Gajumaru in Japanese) located in the Nakama district of Yakushima. This tree isn't just any tree; it's a symbol of the island's unique environment and the daily life of its inhabitants. While the Yakusugi cedars and Jomon Sugi represent the extraordinary, the Gajumaru embodies the ordinary, yet equally captivating, aspects of Yakushima. What makes the Nakama Gajumaru so special is its shape. Over the years, its aerial roots have grown and intertwined, forming a large, natural archway. This tunnel-like structure has become a popular spot for photographs. Cars can even drive through it. This particular banyan is estimated to be over 300 years old. The banyan tree also acts as a natural windbreak for the village. Historically, the base of the tree was also a place of prayer, particularly for childbirth and health. Local legend says that black stones at the base of the tree would increase in number each year, representing a local god of childbirth. Yakushima marks the northernmost habitat for Gajumaru trees in Japan. The Nakama Gajumaru stands near the Nakama Bridge, marking the entrance to the village.
