Getting There

Car
If you are travelling by car, start from the main entrance of Mount Kenya National Park at Nanyuki. Drive towards the park entrance and pay the entrance fee (approximately $20 for non-residents). Follow the road that leads into the park. After about 15 km, you will reach the Chogoria Gate, which is another entry point. Continue on the main road, which turns into a rougher track, until you reach the Shiptons campsite turnoff. Follow the signs leading to Shiptons campsite, which is about 8 km from this turnoff. Note that a 4x4 vehicle is recommended due to rough terrain.

Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, take a matatu (shared taxi) from Nanyuki to the Mount Kenya National Park entrance. The fare is approximately $5. Once you arrive at the park entrance, you can either hire a local taxi or a guide who can drive you to Shiptons campsite. This will typically cost around $30-$50 for the ride. Ensure that you arrange this in advance to avoid delays.

If you are already in the park and prefer hiking, from the Chogoria Gate, take the trail that leads towards the mountain. The hike to Shiptons campsite will take about 6-8 hours depending on your pace. The trail is well-marked, but be prepared for steep sections. Make sure to carry enough water and snacks, as there are no facilities along the trail.
