Or Torah Synagogue: A Mosaic Masterpiece

The Or Torah Synagogue, also called the Tunisian Synagogue, stands just outside Acre's old city walls as a vibrant center for worship and a dazzling display of Jewish heritage. Founded in 1955 by Tunisian immigrants, the synagogue sought to revive Jewish pride through mosaic art, echoing ancient synagogues across Israel. For over five decades, artisans meticulously adorned the synagogue's four floors with mosaics crafted from natural stones sourced throughout Israel. These mosaics vividly narrate Jewish history, from the enslavement in Egypt to the Holocaust, and celebrate Jewish holidays and the modern State of Israel. Silver doors lead to the main ark, housing seven Torah arks, while stained-glass windows depict the Knesset and the Israeli flag. Today, the Or Torah Synagogue serves as a religious and cultural anchor for Acre's Sephardic Jewish community and welcomes visitors to admire its stunning mosaics and learn about Jewish history and tradition.
