Lindau's iconic Bavarian Lion statue: A symbol of strength and history guarding the harbor entrance on beautiful Lake Constance.

4.8

The Bayerischer Löwe, or Bavarian Lion, is a majestic monument that has become the symbol of Lindau and a sentinel of its harbor since 1856. This impressive sandstone sculpture stands six meters tall and weighs approximately 50 tons. It represents the Free State of Bavaria and embodies the region's strength and pride. Positioned on the eastern side of the harbor entrance, the lion gazes proudly out over Lake Constance, creating a picturesque scene with the New Lighthouse on the opposite side. The statue's detailed craftsmanship, from its muscular physique to its expressive face, captivates visitors. The lion's construction coincided with Lindau's economic rise in the 19th century as it became a significant trade center connected to Lake Constance's shipping network and the railway. Today, the Bayerischer Löwe remains a must-see attraction, offering stunning views and a tangible link to Bavaria's history. It serves as a reminder of Lindau's past and present, inviting tourists to explore the town's charming streets, vibrant markets, and inviting cafes. Whether you're interested in history, art, or simply soaking in the beauty of the surroundings, the Bayerischer Löwe offers an unforgettable experience and is a highlight of any visit to Lindau.
