Discover more about Grossratsgebäude

The Grossratsgebäude, located at Masanserstrasse 3 in Chur, is the building where the sessions of the Grand Council, the parliamentary legislature of Graubünden, take place. It is situated north of the Old Town, in close proximity to the Theater Chur. Originally, the building was a unified structure constructed between 1861 and 1863 by architect Johannes Ludwig in the Neo-Renaissance style, serving as an armory. In 1959, architect Martin Risch divided the building into two parts, creating separate spaces for the theater and the parliament. The Grossratsgebäude is a significant landmark embodying the cultural and historical essence of the Swiss region. Its architecture showcases a blend of historical styles. Inside the Grossratsaal are 40 coat-of-arms disks of the (then) 39 Grisons districts and the cantonal coat of arms from 1960 by Giuseppe Scartezzini. Between 2008 and 2009, the entrance area was redesigned according to plans by Olgiati, which sparked public debate and was accompanied by construction delays and legal disputes.
