    Discover more about Rheinschlucht

The Rheinschlucht, or Rhine Gorge, is a stunning natural wonder in the Surselva region of Graubünden, Switzerland. Carved by the Rhine River, this impressive gorge stretches for approximately 13 kilometers and reaches depths of up to 400 meters. Its nickname, the "Grand Canyon of Switzerland," is well-deserved, thanks to its dramatic cliffs, unique rock formations, and the turquoise waters of the river. The gorge's origins trace back to the Flims landslide, a colossal natural event that occurred around 10,000 years ago. Over 25 million tons of limestone collapsed, burying the valley and damming the Rhine. This created a lake that persisted for about 1,000 years until the river gradually eroded its path through the debris, forming the spectacular gorge we see today. Today, the Rheinschlucht is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Hiking trails wind along the rim and the bottom of the gorge, offering breathtaking views. The Rhaetian Railway also runs through the gorge, providing a unique perspective from the comfort of a train. River rafting and kayaking are popular activities, allowing visitors to experience the gorge from a different angle. Several viewing platforms, such as Il Spir and Islabord, offer panoramic vistas of the landscape. The Rheinschlucht is not only a visual spectacle but also an area of significant ecological value. The gorge is home to diverse flora and fauna, including rare plants and animals. The unique combination of geological history, natural beauty, and outdoor activities makes the Rheinschlucht a must-visit destination in Switzerland.
