    Discover more about Waaghaus

The Waaghaus, located on Bohl 14 in St. Gallen, is a historically significant building dating back to 1584-1585. Built by city master builder Wolfgang Fögeli, it initially served as a trade hall, known as a Kauf-, Gred- und Waaghaus, where merchants weighed, taxed, and stored their goods. The name 'Waaghaus' is derived from the German word 'Waag,' meaning scale. Over the centuries, the Waaghaus has adapted to the changing needs of the city. In 1876, a post office was located in the building until it was renovated in 1958. Today, the ground floor hosts various events, such as markets and exhibitions, maintaining a vibrant atmosphere. The upper floor houses a hall for exhibitions and concerts, as well as the council chamber for the St. Gallen city parliament. The building is under federal protection and is considered important for St. Gallen's city center. The Waaghaus features notable architectural elements. The open lower level, originally designed for wagons to pass through, is characterized by its large arched entrances. The east and west facades are adorned with stepped gables. A clock with a moon phase indicator and a roof turret with an onion dome, salvaged from the old town hall, add to its historical charm. The Waaghaus stands as a testament to St. Gallen's rich history and its ongoing commitment to preserving its architectural heritage.
