Getting There

  • Walking

    Start your journey from Thamel, the tourist hub of Kathmandu. Head north on the main street, 'Tridevi Marg', until you reach 'Durbar Marg'. Turn left onto 'Durbar Marg' and walk until you reach 'Kantipath'. Continue straight until you hit the intersection with 'New Road'. Here, take a right turn. Walk straight for about 1 kilometer until you reach the 'Bagmati River'. Cross the river via the footbridge. Continue walking north along 'Bagmati River' towards 'Naya Bazaar'. From Naya Bazaar, take a left on 'Kopan Road' and follow the road uphill. As you approach the 'Kopan Monastery', keep following the road to the north. You will start to see signs indicating the way to 'Shivapuri National Park'. Enter the park area and follow the trail signs towards the Apex of Shivapuri Hill. The entire walk from Thamel should take approximately 1.5 to 2 hours depending on your pace.

  • Public Transport (Microbus)

    From Thamel, walk to the nearest microbus station at 'Sorhakhutte'. Take a microbus heading towards 'Kopan'. The fare is very affordable, usually around 30 NPR. Inform the driver you want to get off at 'Kopan Monastery'. Once you arrive, follow the road leading north, which will lead you into Shivapuri National Park. Look for the trail signs marking the route to the Apex of Shivapuri Hill. The bus ride will take around 30 to 40 minutes, and from the monastery, the hike will take about 1 hour.

    If you are already at the base of Shivapuri Hill, head to the trailhead located near the entrance of Shivapuri National Park. Ensure you have a valid entrance ticket (around 100 NPR for foreign tourists). Follow the well-marked trails that lead you uphill. The main trail will take you directly to the Apex of Shivapuri Hill. This hike is moderately challenging and will take about 2 to 3 hours to reach the top, so make sure to wear comfortable hiking shoes and carry enough water.
