Getting There

  • Walking

    To reach the Machu Picchu Hiking Trail from the main ruins, exit the main archaeological site and head towards the entrance gate. Once you are outside the entrance, follow the pathway that leads toward Aguas Calientes. You'll see signs indicating the direction to the hiking trails. Continue walking for about 10-15 minutes until you reach the junction where the trail begins. The start of the hiking trail is marked with information boards and is located approximately 1.5 kilometers from the entrance of Machu Picchu.

    Alternatively, if you are already in Aguas Calientes, you can start from the main square. Head north on Avenida Pachacutec until you reach the intersection with Calle Imperio de los Incas. Turn left and follow the signs that lead to the Machu Picchu Hiking Trail. After around 20 minutes of a moderate uphill walk, you will arrive at the trailhead which will be well marked with signs and maps.

    If you're looking for a more scenic route, you can walk along the riverbank from Aguas Calientes. Start at the bridge near the train station, and follow the path along the Urubamba River. Stay on the left side of the river for about 30 minutes until you reach the footbridge leading up to the hiking trail. This route offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and the river.
