History of Savinja

The Savinja region has a rich history dating back to prehistoric times. Archaeological finds indicate that the area was inhabited by early human settlers during the Neolithic period. Artifacts from the Iron Age show that it was an important hub for the Celts before the Roman Empire expanded its influence into this region.
The Savinja Valley was significantly influenced by the Romans from the 1st century BC onwards. The town of Celeia, now known as Celje, became a prominent Roman settlement. Roman roads, villas, and public buildings were constructed, and the town thrived as a center of trade and culture.
