Getting There

  • Walking

    Start from the center of Moshi, specifically at the Moshi Main Bus Stand. Head northwest on Uhuru Street towards the Moshi Clock Tower. Continue straight for about 1 kilometer until you reach the junction with Old Moshi Road. At this junction, turn left and continue walking along Old Moshi Road for approximately 2 kilometers. You will pass by local shops and cafes. Look for signage for Kilimanjaro National Park, as Shira is within this area. After 2 kilometers, you will reach the entrance to Kilimanjaro National Park. Once at the entrance, you will need to hike approximately 4 kilometers to reach Shira, following the marked trails. The hike is moderate, and you will enjoy scenic views of the surrounding landscape.

  • Bicycle

    From the Moshi Main Bus Stand, rent a bicycle from a local rental shop. Begin your ride heading northwest on Uhuru Street towards the Moshi Clock Tower. Once you reach the Clock Tower, continue along Old Moshi Road, cycling for about 2 kilometers. Keep an eye out for the Kilimanjaro National Park signage. Upon reaching the park entrance, you can secure your permit and continue cycling. Please note that the terrain may vary, and you may need to dismount for certain sections. As you approach Shira, be prepared for some uphill sections, totaling about 4 kilometers of cycling to reach the peak.

  • Public Transport (Matatu)

    From Moshi, head to the Matatu (shared taxi) station located near the Moshi Main Bus Stand. Look for Matatus heading towards Machame. Take a Matatu to Machame and inform the driver that you are heading to Shira. The ride will take around 30 minutes. Once you arrive in Machame, you will need to hike about 6 kilometers to reach Shira. There are trails from Machame that lead directly to Shira. Follow the signs, and ensure you have a local guide or a map for assistance on the trail.
