At Desert View Point, a National Historic Landmark plaque and stone memorial commemorate the 1956 Grand Canyon TWA-United Airlines Aviation Accident Site. On June 30, 1956, a Trans World Airlines (TWA) Super Constellation L-1049 and a United Airlines DC-7 collided in uncongested airspace 21,000 feet over the Grand Canyon, killing all 128 people onboard the two flights. The TWA flight was en route to Kansas City, while the United flight was headed to Chicago. Thunderclouds were forming over the Grand Canyon, and both planes were flying at the same altitude. The United DC-7's left wing struck the TWA's tail, causing both planes to crash. The tragedy spurred an unprecedented effort to modernize and increase safety in America's postwar airways, culminating in the establishment of the modern Federal Aviation Administration. Desert View Point itself is the easternmost viewpoint on the South Rim accessible by car and offers expansive views of the inner canyon, the Colorado River, the Navajo Nation, and the Painted Desert. The point is located a few steps beyond the base of the historic Watchtower, with guardrails for safety.
