Discover more about Shrine of the Ages

The Shrine of the Ages stands as a testament to interfaith cooperation and community engagement within Grand Canyon National Park. The concept for an interfaith chapel emerged as early as 1917, but it wasn't until 1952 that the Shrine of the Ages Chapel Corporation was formed. Representatives from Catholic, Jewish, and Protestant faiths united to realize this vision, aiming to create a space for worship accessible to all. Harold E. Wagoner, an architect, designed the structure to reflect the architectural style of a kiva, a Native American place of worship, in keeping with National Park Service guidelines to respect the natural environment and Native American culture. Although initial plans envisioned a location on the canyon rim with a sweeping canyon view, the building was ultimately constructed near the Grand Canyon Pioneer Cemetery. Completed in 1970, the National Park Service took ownership in 1975. Today, the Shrine of the Ages serves as a versatile venue. It hosts ranger programs, the Grand Canyon Music Festival, and can be rented for private events like wedding ceremonies with a special use permit. The building is within walking distance of Market Plaza, Mather Campground, Trailer Village, and Yavapai Lodge.
