Discover more about Zion Canyon Scenic Dr

The Zion Canyon Scenic Drive, historically known as the Floor of the Valley Road, is a remarkable journey through Zion National Park's main canyon. This road, initially a primitive wagon trail in the early 20th century, was transformed into a scenic byway designed to harmonize with the natural environment. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) played a crucial role in the 1930s, improving the road and using native sandstone to construct retaining walls and other features, blending infrastructure with the landscape. Today, the 6.5-mile drive provides access to some of Zion's most famous trails, including Angels Landing, the Emerald Pools, and the Narrows. To preserve the canyon's tranquility and reduce traffic, private vehicles are restricted from accessing the road for most of the year. Instead, a free shuttle service transports visitors between the Zion Canyon Visitor Center and the Temple of Sinawava, with multiple stops along the way. The road follows the Virgin River, offering views of the towering rock monoliths and the canyon's unique geology. The reddish hue of the road surface itself is a testament to the efforts to integrate the drive with its surroundings. Along the route, you'll find access to historic landmarks like the Zion Lodge and the Weeping Rock, each contributing to the rich tapestry of Zion's natural and cultural history. Whether you're a hiker seeking challenging trails or a sightseer looking for awe-inspiring vistas, the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive offers an unforgettable experience. The shuttle system allows for a relaxed exploration of the canyon, inviting visitors to hop on and off at their leisure and discover the wonders of Zion National Park.
