The path begins at Festungsgasse 4, where you can also find the funicular valley station. Be aware that the footpath is not entirely barrier-free and may not be suitable for strollers due to its steepness and steps. Discover more about Fortress Hohensalzburg

Perched atop the Festungsberg, 506 meters above sea level, Fortress Hohensalzburg is a symbol of Salzburg and a testament to the power of the Prince-Archbishops who once ruled the city. Construction began in 1077, initiated by Archbishop Gebhard I of Helfenstein, originally as a simple bailey with a wooden wall. Over the centuries, it was expanded and fortified, reaching its current appearance around 1500 under Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach. Throughout its history, the fortress served primarily to protect the principality and the archbishops from attack. Remarkably, it has never been taken by foreign troops. Today, visitors can explore the fortress's many museums, including the Fortress Museum, the Marionette Museum, and the Museum of the Rainer Regiment. The Princes' Chambers, dating back to 1501/1502, showcase original furnishings and offer a glimpse into the lives of the archbishops. The fortress also features a magical theater and modern media stations, providing an engaging experience for all ages. Don't miss the Panorama Tour, which leads to the Reckturm viewing platform for arguably the most beautiful view in the city. The fortress is open year-round and can be reached either on foot or via the Festungsbahn funicular, operating since 1892. Every Sunday, the tower brass players perform from the trumpet tower, filling the old town with Baroque fanfares. The Hohensalzburg Fortress also hosts the renowned Salzburg Fortress Concerts.
