Discover more about Ramna Lake

Ramna Lake, an 8.76-acre body of water within the expansive 68.5-acre Ramna Park, provides a vital green lung for Dhaka. Its history stretches back to 1610 during the Mughal era when Dhaka was established as the capital of Bengal. Originally conceived as a residential area with gardens, mosques and temples, the area declined after the Mughals but was revitalized during British colonial rule. Today, Ramna Lake offers a tranquil retreat from the city's frenetic pace. Visitors can stroll along the wooden and iron walkways that line the lake's edge, enjoying scenic views and a cool breeze. The lake also attracts migratory birds, enhancing the park's natural charm. Ramna Park is also a significant cultural landmark, serving as the primary venue for Dhaka's vibrant Pohela Boishakh (Bengali New Year) celebrations. The park boasts diverse plant life, including flowering trees, shrubs, fruit-bearing and medicinal plants, fostering a balanced ecosystem. Jogging and walking tracks cater to health enthusiasts, while families can enjoy picnics and playtime. Managed by the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, Ramna Park is open daily, offering free entry to all. However, the park also carries a tragic history, including the destruction of the Ramna Kali Temple during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971 and bomb explosions in 2001. Despite these events, Ramna Park remains a symbol of resilience and Dhaka's enduring spirit.
