Discover more about Museum of Independence

The Museum of Independence, situated in Dhaka's Suhrawardi Udyan, is a poignant tribute to Bangladesh's journey to freedom. Opened on March 25, 2015, the 45th Independence Day of Bangladesh, this museum complex lies on the very grounds where Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared the struggle for independence and where the Pakistani forces surrendered after the War of Liberation. The museum itself is located underground to preserve the surrounding green space, a conscious decision by architects Marina Tabassum and Kashef Mahboob Chowdhury. Above ground, the Independence Monument, a slender tower of light clad in glass, stands tall as a symbol of hope and resilience. The complex also features a multimedia projection theater, an amphitheater, and the Shikha Chirantony (eternal flame), representing the enduring spirit of Bengali nationalism. Inside, the museum presents a comprehensive overview of the events leading up to Bangladesh's independence. Over 300 historical photographs displayed in 144 glass panels, terracotta artifacts, and newspaper clippings chronicle the independence movement. Visitors can view personal belongings of freedom fighters, weapons used during the war, and a replica of the table where the Pakistani Army signed the surrender document. The museum also showcases archaeological sites and monuments of Bangladesh. Allow at least 2-3 hours to fully appreciate the exhibits. The museum provides an educational environment suitable for families interested in learning about Bangladesh's history and culture.
