Swadhinata Stambha, meaning Independence Monument, is a national monument in Dhaka, Bangladesh, commemorating the historical events that unfolded in Suhrawardy Udyan, formerly known as Ramna Race Course ground, concerning the Bangladesh Liberation War. This monument stands as a tribute to the sacrifices and struggles that led to the independence of Bangladesh in 1971. The history of Swadhinata Stambha dates back to 1996 when the Government of Bangladesh initiated a project to restore the memories of the Liberation War within Suhrawardy Udyan. A competition was organized in 1997 to select the best monument design for the proposed project. Architects Kashef Mahboob Chowdhury and Marina Tabassum, graduates of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, presented a design that encompassed a museum, multimedia projection theater, amphitheater, and other ancillary facilities, with the monument itself as the focal point. Construction commenced in 1999. The monument's design and architecture are deeply symbolic. The main attraction is the Stambha, a tower built on the spot where the commander-in-chief of the East Pakistan Army, Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi, signed the surrender papers. The tower is square in plan, measuring 16 feet wide on each side, with a total area of 64 inches. During the night, the tower transforms into a white pillar as rays of light emanate from every inch, creating an elegant spectacle. The underground museum within the complex features a collection of photographs with historical significance. A large photograph of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's historic 7th March Speech is a central attraction. The complex also includes terracotta murals depicting war heroes and events from the Independence War, a 2,000-seat auditorium, and an open-air theater. An eternal flame burns beside the tower, and a water body reflects the tower, enhancing the site's beauty. In 2009, the government increased the project's cost to 1.8161 billion BDT, marking the second phase of construction.
