Ice Age hills between sea and sky

Bjergetapen is the “mountain stage” of the Mols Bjerge Trail, winding for roughly 19.5–19.9 km through the heart of Nationalpark Mols Bjerge near Ebeltoft. Here Denmark’s so‑called mini‑mountains rise to around 137 metres above sea level, their rounded crests and abrupt slopes formed by the retreating glaciers some 18,000 years ago. As you walk, you traverse dead‑ice terrain: a sculpted patchwork of ridges, hollows and kettle holes where huge blocks of buried ice once melted slowly away. The loop is laid out to keep you in this varied highland for almost the entire day, with only the occasional farm or shelter to remind you that you are still in one of Denmark’s most visited national parks. Underfoot, the path constantly changes from narrow sandy tracks across heath to earthy forest trails and short stretches of farm track, rarely touching asphalt at all.

Dead‑ice hollows, ancient stones and old pasture

One of the fascinations of Bjergetapen is how clearly the land tells its own story. Deep, rounded depressions beside the trail are classic dead‑ice holes, some now filled with wet meadows, others fringed by juniper and hawthorn. Scattered boulders, carried here by the ice from distant bedrock, sit like stray giants in the grass. Human traces are just as striking. Nearby, the great burial chamber of Porskær Stenhus and other megalithic monuments show that people have shaped and used these hills since the Stone Age. Later, centuries of grazing turned much of Mols Bjerge into open heath and pasture. Today cattle, horses and sheep still work the slopes, preventing the land from reverting to dense forest and helping rare plants and invertebrates to thrive.

Viewpoints and demanding ascents

Although the altitude is modest by international standards, the constant ups and downs make this a medium to hard hike. Waymarked as a quality trail, it is generally easy to follow but can be steep in places and is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. Long, sustained climbs reward you with far‑reaching panoramas over Djursland’s coastline, bays and inland lakes. Classic viewpoints along or just off the route include Trehøje and Agri Bavnehøj, both offering almost 360‑degree views on clear days. From these tops, the dead‑ice terrain is laid out like a relief map, with ridges, valleys and hidden pockets of woodland stretching to the sea. In windy weather the summits feel wild and exposed; in summer the heather and grass hum with insect life.

Wildlife, flora and the living laboratory

Bjergetapen passes through some of Denmark’s richest habitats. More than 600 plant species have been recorded along the stage, from dry‑loving heather and grasses on the slopes to moisture‑loving flowers in hollows and spring lines. Old oak woods such as Skovbjerg, never fully cultivated, provide habitat for hole‑nesting birds, fungi and insects that depend on ancient trees. You may spot buzzards circling on thermals, hear larks over the open hills and see butterflies and beetles on sunny banks. Parts of the wider area are used for active ecological research, and the whole of Mols Bjerge functions as a kind of open‑air laboratory for understanding how traditional grazing and natural processes shape a semi‑wild landscape over time.

Waymarking, facilities and trail character

The stage is internationally certified as a Leading Quality Trail, and this shows in its clear waymarking and thoughtful routing. Green posts with arrows and the name “Mols Bjerge Stien” guide you across farmland boundaries and through large grazing enclosures, where numbered gates correspond to maps available on‑site and in apps. At main trailheads you find area maps and information about the route and surrounding nature. Along or close to the route, simple facilities such as picnic tables, primitive toilets, shelters, fire pits and drinking water points make it easy to turn the hike into an unhurried day out. The loop format allows you to start and finish at the same car park, and there are options to shorten the walk using signed cut‑offs if 20 kilometres of steep terrain feels too ambitious.
