Discover more about Pont Saint-Benezet (Le Pont d'Avignon)

The Pont Saint-Bénezet, or Pont d'Avignon, is a globally recognized symbol of the city, famed for the children's song and its resilient, though incomplete, structure. Originally constructed in the 12th century, between 1177 and 1185, the bridge stretched approximately 900 meters with 22 arches, linking Avignon with Villeneuve-lès-Avignon across the Rhône River. It served as a crucial passage for trade and pilgrimage routes between Spain and Italy. The bridge's construction is attributed to Saint Bénézet, a shepherd who, according to legend, was divinely inspired to build a bridge across the formidable Rhône. Despite initial skepticism, his vision was eventually supported, leading to the bridge's completion in 1185. Throughout its history, the Pont d'Avignon faced numerous challenges, including floods and war, leading to multiple repairs and eventual abandonment in the 17th century. Today, only four arches remain, yet they continue to attract visitors from around the world. Visitors can explore the remaining arches, visit the Chapel of Saint Nicholas built on one of the piers, and learn about the bridge's history through multimedia exhibits. The site offers audio guides in multiple languages, including a special version for children, and provides a glimpse into the past with 3D reconstructions of the bridge in its prime. Though dancing 'on' the bridge might not be possible due to its narrow width, the spirit of the famous song lives on, celebrating Avignon's rich cultural heritage. The Pont d'Avignon is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site, recognized for its historical significance and architectural marvel.
