Discover more about Water Gardens Vaipahi

Water Gardens Vaipahi, also known as Jardins d'eau de Vaipahi, is a 2.5-acre botanical garden and historical site located in Mataiea, on the southwest coast of Tahiti Nui. This idyllic oasis is home to over 75 plant species from around the world, coexisting with the island's native flora. The gardens feature a landscape of grassy lawns, ponds, streams, and cascading waterfalls. Vaipahi has been a spiritually significant location for Polynesians for centuries. According to ancient legends of the Teva tribe, the Vaimai River's water possessed healing properties and served as a pathway for soul purification. The Vaipahi Waterfall, the garden's centerpiece, was believed to embody the "mighty breath of the spirit of the waters". The souls of the deceased of the Teva clan were thought to have taken this path of purification during their quest for paradise. In 2007, the local government renovated the area, transforming it into a botanical garden. Visitors can explore the gardens via walking paths that wind through the grounds. Signage in French, Tahitian, and English provides information about the plants and shares ancient Tahitian stories connected to the garden's various spots. The gardens also feature a seaside area across the road with tables for relaxation.
