From Reykjavik, take Route 1 (the Ring Road) heading east. Continue on Route 1 for approximately 90 kilometers until you reach the junction for Route 249 towards Þorsmörk. Turn onto Route 249 and follow it for about 30 kilometers. The last stretch of the road is a gravel road, so please drive carefully. There are no significant facilities along this route, so make sure to have enough fuel and supplies before your journey. Once you reach the Fimmvörðuháls trailhead, you will find parking available.

To reach Fimmvörðuháls via public transport, you can take a bus from Reykjavik to Þórsmörk. Companies like Sterna and Reykjavik Excursions offer services that travel to Þórsmörk daily during the summer months. Once you arrive at the Þórsmörk bus stop, follow the marked trails to the Fimmvörðuháls trailhead. Be sure to check the bus schedules in advance and book your tickets, as they can fill up quickly in peak season. The bus fare is approximately 10,000 ISK one way.
