Discover more about Hokkaido Colonization Commission Sapporo Main Office (Historical Village of Hokkaido)

The Historical Village of Hokkaido, or Kaitaku no Mura, is a unique open-air museum that transports visitors back to Hokkaido's pioneering days. Opened in 1983 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Hokkaido's development, the village features over 50 relocated and restored buildings from the Meiji and Taisho periods (1868 to 1926). These buildings represent various aspects of life in Hokkaido during this transformative era. The village is divided into four distinct areas: a town, a fishing village, a farm village, and a mountain village. Each area recreates the atmosphere of its time, offering a glimpse into the lifestyles, industries, and cultures of the people who shaped Hokkaido. The Hokkaido Colonization Commission Sapporo Main Office, a replica of the original 1873 building that burned down in 1879, serves as the visitor center. Visitors can explore the buildings, many of which are furnished to reflect daily life, and immerse themselves in the customs and culture of early settlers. In the summer, a horse-drawn trolley runs along the main street of the town, while in winter, a horse-drawn sleigh offers rides around the villages. Seasonal festivals and hands-on events, such as traditional toy making and farm work, are held throughout the year. The Pioneer Village Café offers local favorites like "imo-mochi" (potato cakes) and the "Tondenhei Set Meal".
