Discover more about Sogakudo Concert Hall, Ueno Campus, Tokyo Uniνersity of the Arts

The Sogakudo Concert Hall, nestled within the Ueno Campus of the Tokyo University of the Arts, stands as a testament to Japan's rich musical heritage and architectural innovation. Established in 1890 as part of the Tokyo Music School (now the Music Department of Tokyo University of the Arts), the original hall played a pivotal role in the development of Western-style music in Japan. The current hall was rebuilt in 1998 to enhance its facilities and acoustics. The hall's design emphasizes its function as a space for musical education, research, and performance, harmonizing with the surrounding environment. The concert hall is the first in the world to feature a movable ceiling above the audience seating, allowing for acoustic adjustments based on the music or performance. The hall is equipped with a large pipe organ, imported from the UK in 1920, which is the oldest concert organ still in use in Japan. Visitors can enjoy a variety of musical events, from classical concerts to contemporary performances, and explore the collections of music documentation displayed in the gallery. The hall's location within Ueno Park adds to its appeal, offering access to gardens, museums, and other cultural attractions.
