History of Central Development Region

  • The Kathmandu Valley, part of the Central Development Region, is known as the cradle of Nepalese civilization. The valley has been inhabited since at least the 3rd century BCE, with evidence of a sophisticated urban civilization. It was an important center for trade and cultural exchange between the Indian subcontinent and Tibet.

  • The Licchavi dynasty ruled the region from the 4th to the 9th century CE. This period is marked by a significant development in art, architecture, and culture. The Licchavi kings established many of the earliest Hindu temples and Buddhist stupas in Kathmandu Valley, which are still prominent today.

  • The Malla period, from the 12th to the 18th century, was a time of great cultural and architectural advancement. The valley was divided into three principalities: Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur, each ruled by its own Malla king. This era saw the creation of many of the valley's most iconic structures, including the Durbar Squares of each city, filled with magnificent palaces, temples, and courtyards.

  • In the mid-18th century, King Prithvi Narayan Shah of Gorkha launched a campaign to unify the various small kingdoms and principalities into a single nation. His conquest of the Kathmandu Valley in 1769 was a pivotal moment in the formation of modern Nepal. The unification brought an end to the Malla rule and integrated the valley into a larger national framework.

  • The Rana era, from 1846 to 1951, was a period of autocratic rule by the Rana family, who acted as hereditary prime ministers. During this time, the Central Development Region saw the construction of many grand palaces and neo-classical buildings. The Ranas also maintained close ties with the British Raj, which influenced the region's architecture and culture.

  • Post-1951, Nepal underwent significant political and social changes. The Central Development Region, particularly Kathmandu, became the political and economic heart of the nation. The region saw rapid urbanization and modernization, with improvements in infrastructure, education, and healthcare. Despite these changes, the region has managed to preserve its rich cultural heritage, making it a vibrant blend of the old and new.
