From Whangarei, drive north on State Highway 1 for about 70 km until you reach the turn-off for State Highway 12 towards Dargaville. Continue on State Highway 12 for approximately 30 km until you reach the junction with State Highway 1 again. Turn left onto State Highway 1 and drive for about 15 km until you reach the exit for Matapouri Road. Follow Matapouri Road for about 10 km, which will take you directly to Matapouri, where Whale Bay is located. There are no tolls on this route, and parking is available near the beach.

Public Transportation
Take a bus from Whangarei to Matapouri. Services such as the 'Nexus' bus operate routes to Matapouri with a transfer in Tutukaka. The total travel time may take around 2 hours depending on the schedule. Be sure to check the bus schedule ahead of time as services may be limited, especially on weekends. After arriving in Matapouri, it is a short walk to Whale Bay, which is approximately 1.5 km from the bus stop. There is no bus fare for this route, but check the Nexus website for any potential costs.

If you are already in Matapouri, you can walk to Whale Bay. Start from the main beach area and follow the coastal walkway towards Whale Bay. The walk takes about 30 minutes and offers stunning views along the way. Ensure you wear comfortable shoes as parts of the path may be uneven.
