Getting There

  • Car

    From Cusco, take the road towards Puno (Route 3S). After about 1 hour, you'll reach the town of Checacupe. Turn left towards Pitumarca (this is a smaller road). Continue on this road for approximately 30 minutes until you reach the town of Pitumarca. Here, you can ask locals for directions to Vinicunca. The road continues to the trailhead at a place called 'Cusipata' or 'Pampa de Paccchanta'. The drive from Pitumarca to the trailhead takes about 1 hour. Ensure your car is in good condition as the road can be rough. There are no tolls on this route.

  • Public Transportation

    From Cusco, head to the Santiago Market and look for a minivan (collectivo) heading to Pitumarca. The fare is typically around 10-15 PEN and the journey takes about 2 hours. Once in Pitumarca, you can either hire a taxi or find another collectivo to take you to the trailhead at 'Cusipata'. The taxi fare from Pitumarca to the trailhead is around 30-50 PEN, depending on negotiation. Ensure you confirm the return arrangements as well.

    Once you arrive at the 'Cusipata' trailhead, you will begin your hike to Vinicunca. The hike is approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) and generally takes around 3-4 hours.
