Discover more about Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial
A Sacred Tribute on English Soil
Nestled on a gently sloping 30-acre site donated by the University of Cambridge, the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial stands as the only World War II-era American cemetery in the United Kingdom. Established in 1956, it serves as the final resting place for 3,811 U.S. service members who lost their lives primarily in the Battle of the Atlantic and the strategic air campaigns over northwest Europe. The cemetery’s design, by Perry, Shaw, Hepburn & Dean with landscape by Edmund Whiting of the Olmsted Brothers, reflects a harmonious blend of solemnity and natural beauty, framed by woodland on its west and south sides.Immaculate Grounds and Symbolic Layout
Visitors are greeted by the great mall and reflecting pools extending eastward from the flagpole platform near the entrance. The burial area is arranged in seven curved plots laid out in concentric arcs, evoking imagery such as the propellers of a plane or spokes of a wheel, all facing the flagpole in a theatre-style alignment. Each of the 3,811 graves is marked by a pristine white marble headstone—3,732 bearing Latin crosses and 81 Stars of David—inscribed with names, ranks, and service numbers. The south side features the Walls of the Missing, where 5,127 names of those lost in action or buried at sea are etched in stone, with rosettes marking those since identified and recovered. The Chapel of Remembrance and Artistic Memorials
At the far end of the cemetery stands the memorial building crowned by the Chapel of Remembrance. This chapel offers a peaceful sanctuary for contemplation, adorned with vibrant stained-glass windows that depict the seals of U.S. states and military decorations. The mosaic ceiling honors the sacrifices of the air forces, while bronze doors at the entrance bear detailed representations of military equipment and naval vessels. The south exterior wall displays a large map of the United Kingdom, highlighting locations where American units were stationed during the war, providing historical context to the site.Visitor Center: Stories and History Brought to Life
Opened in 2014, the 4,000-square-foot visitor center enriches the memorial experience with interpretive exhibits that incorporate personal stories, photographs, films, and interactive displays. The center focuses on pivotal campaigns such as the Battle of the Atlantic, the Strategic Bombing Campaign, and the preparations for D-Day, illustrating the vital British-American partnership that contributed to Allied victory. Visitors can engage with digital kiosks and watch a short introductory film to deepen their understanding of the sacrifices commemorated here. Staff are available to assist and provide further insights.A Place of Reflection and Respect
The cemetery’s immaculate lawns, orderly rows of headstones, and tranquil atmosphere create a profoundly moving environment. Visitors are encouraged to maintain a respectful silence, dressing appropriately for the solemnity of the site. Photography of the grounds is generally permitted, though photographing individual headstones is discouraged out of respect. The site is fully wheelchair-accessible and provides restrooms and seating areas, though no café is available. The cemetery remains open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., except on December 25 and January 1.Honoring Memory Through Care and Ceremony
The Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial is meticulously maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission, ensuring the dignity of those commemorated endures. It also hosts ceremonies on Memorial Day and other occasions, drawing visitors who come to pay homage to the courage and sacrifice of American servicemen and women. The site stands as both a historical landmark and a poignant reminder of the costs of war, fostering remembrance and education for generations to come.Iconic landmarks you can’t miss
