A Hidden Courtyard Steeped in History

Lady Stair's Close is a narrow, peaceful courtyard just off the bustling Royal Mile in Edinburgh’s Old Town. The close centers around Lady Stair’s House, a striking 17th-century townhouse built in 1622 by Sir William Gray of Pittendrum, a wealthy Scottish merchant and baronet. Originally named Lady Gray’s House after Gray’s widow, it was later renamed Lady Stair’s House when Elizabeth Dundas, the widow of the 1st Earl of Stair, acquired it in 1719. The close itself took on this name, becoming a quiet enclave rich in historical associations.

Architectural Charm and Restoration

The house is an excellent example of Scottish baronial architecture, featuring turrets, a carved stone lintel dated 1622, and a romantic balcony reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet’s. After falling into disrepair in the late 19th century, it was saved from demolition by Lord Rosebery, a descendant of Sir William Gray, who restored and embellished the building with period features. The initials of Gray and his wife remain carved above the entrance, linking the building to its original owners.

The Literary Heart: Writers' Museum and Makars’ Court

Lady Stair’s House today houses the Writers’ Museum, dedicated to celebrating three of Scotland’s most famous literary figures: Sir Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Robert Burns. The museum contains memorabilia, portraits, and manuscripts that bring these writers’ lives and works to life. Adjacent to the close is Makars’ Court, an outdoor literary monument featuring inscribed stones honoring Scotland’s great poets and writers, adding a cultural depth to the historic setting.

Despite its central location near the Lawnmarket and Edinburgh Castle, Lady Stair's Close remains a relatively quiet and atmospheric spot.
