Getting There

  • Driving

    From Butare (Huye), the Canopy Walkway is accessible by road, approximately a 1.5- to 2-hour drive to the Nyungwe National Park's Uwinka Reception Center. Car hires can cost around 40,000 RWF per day. Roads are generally well-maintained, but can be winding. From the Uwinka Reception Center, it's about an hour's walk to the Canopy Walkway.

  • Public Transport

    To reach Nyungwe National Park using public transport, take a bus from Kigali's Nyabugogo Bus Station to Butare. This takes about 3-4 hours and costs 2,500-3,500 RWF. From Butare, transfer to another bus heading to Gisakura, near Nyungwe Forest National Park, for 1,500-2,500 RWF. From Gisakura, a taxi or moto to the park entrance costs 5,000-10,000 RWF. Buses from Kigali to Rusizi also stop at the Uwinka Center, but the journey can take up to 8 hours.

The Nyungwe Canopy Walkway, established in 2010, is a remarkable experience within Nyungwe National Park, offering a thrilling perspective high above the forest floor. This suspended bridge stretches 160 meters across a deep valley, with the highest point reaching 70 meters above the ground. It is the only canopy walkway in East Africa. The walkway is divided into three sections, offering varying views and heights. The longest section spans 90 meters and stands 70 meters tall. Anchored to strong, tall trees, the bridge provides panoramic views of the forest, allowing visitors to observe primates swinging through the trees and the stunning landscape of the national park. The experience begins with a guided hike along the Igishigishigi Trail, a 2.1 km path that leads to the suspended bridge. The entire walk takes approximately 2 hours, including the hike. Along the way, you'll encounter diverse flora, colorful birds, and countless butterflies. Lucky visitors may even spot some of the park's thirteen primate species. The Nyungwe forest itself is a biodiversity hotspot, home to numerous wild species, including endangered chimpanzees and various other primates. With well-maintained footpaths, the walk is accessible to most visitors, though the terrain can be muddy, especially after rain. The canopy walk is not only a thrilling adventure but also an opportunity to appreciate the beauty and ecological significance of Nyungwe National Park.
