Discover more about Emerald Bay State Park

Emerald Bay State Park, a designated National Natural Landmark since 1969, is renowned for its breathtaking mountain-building processes and glacier-carved granite formations. This natural beauty, combined with its rich history and unique features, makes it a highlight of any visit to the Lake Tahoe area. The park's centerpiece is Emerald Bay, one of Lake Tahoe's most photographed and popular locations. The bay's stunning colors, ranging from shimmering greens to turquoise and blues, contrast beautifully with the surrounding mountain backdrop. Adding to the allure is Vikingsholm, a 38-room mansion considered one of the finest examples of Scandinavian architecture in the United States. Built in 1929 by Mrs. Lora Josephine Knight, it features unique architectural details such as a sod roof and intricately carved dragon beams. Tours of Vikingsholm are available during the summer months. Emerald Bay is also home to Fannette Island, the only island in Lake Tahoe. On the island sits a small stone structure known as the Tea House, which was once used by Mrs. Knight for afternoon tea. In 1994, Emerald Bay was designated an underwater state park, protecting numerous boats, launches, and barges that rest on the bay's bottom. These vessels, remnants of the early 20th century, provide a unique scuba diving and snorkeling experience. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities at Emerald Bay State Park, including hiking, swimming, kayaking, boat tours, and sightseeing. The park offers several hiking trails, ranging from easy nature walks to more challenging treks. The Rubicon Trail, for example, offers stunning views of the lake and connects Emerald Bay to D.L. Bliss State Park.
