Discover more about Wawona Tunnel

The Wawona Tunnel, a marvel of engineering, is an unmissable landmark in Yosemite National Park. Completed in 1933, the 4,233-foot tunnel is not only the longest highway tunnel in California but also a gateway to one of the most famous views in the world: Tunnel View. Construction began in 1930, requiring 230 tons of dynamite to blast through solid granite. The tunnel's creation significantly shortened the trip to Yosemite Valley from Fresno and Southern California. The Wawona Tunnel and the Tunnel View overlook were constructed during a boom in design and development throughout the National Park Service, helping initiate the National Park Service's "rustic design style". Emerging from the tunnel's east portal, visitors are immediately greeted by the iconic Tunnel View. This vista showcases the grandeur of Yosemite Valley, framing El Capitan, Half Dome, Sentinel Rock, Cathedral Rocks, and Bridalveil Fall in a single, breathtaking panorama. The view is particularly stunning at sunset or after a storm. Designated accessible parking spaces are available. The Wawona Tunnel and Tunnel View have been capturing the awe of visitors for decades and were determined eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 due to their exemplary design.
