Discover more about Zuihōden (Grave of Date Masamune)

Zuihoden is the mausoleum of Date Masamune, the founding daimyō of the Sendai Domain, who died in 1636. Constructed in 1637, the original structure was designated a National Treasure in 1931 but was destroyed during World War II. The current mausoleum was rebuilt in 1979, with repairs in 2001 to more closely resemble the original Momoyama architectural style. This style is characterized by intricate woodwork and vivid colors. The Zuihoden complex includes the mausoleums of Date Masamune's son, Date Tadamune, and grandson, Date Tsunamune. These mausoleums, Kansenden and Zennoden respectively, share the same opulent design as Zuihoden. Massive cedar trees surround the paths, symbolizing the Date clan's long history. The Nehanmon Gate (Nirvana Gate) marks the entrance to Masamune's mausoleum, representing the passage from this world to the next. A museum on the grounds displays personal artifacts of the Date family and excavated burial items, including weapons, helmets, and remains of Date family members. Zuihoden is a significant historical site, offering visitors a tranquil space to connect with Sendai's past and appreciate the artistry of Momoyama architecture.
