Discover more about Bragg-Mitchell Mansion

The Bragg-Mitchell Mansion, an architectural icon of Mobile, Alabama, stands as a testament to the city's rich history and Southern charm. Built in 1855 by Judge John Bragg, this 13,000-square-foot Greek Revival mansion was designed to be the center of Mobile's vibrant social life. The mansion is attributed to John's brother, Alexander J. Bragg, a local Alabama architect. Canopied by a grove of century-old oaks and furnished with fine antiques and crystal chandeliers, the Bragg-Mitchell Mansion offers a rare glimpse of life in the Old South. The mansion features double parlors, a circular staircase, and rooms built on a grand scale, reflecting a time when hospitality was a way of life. During the Civil War, the mansion played a role in the Confederacy's defense of Mobile. All the live oak trees on the property were cut down to give Confederate defenders a clear line of fire. The furnishings were removed to Bragg's plantation in Lowndes County, which was later burned by Wilson's Raiders. After passing through several owners, the mansion was donated to the Explore Center in the late 1970s. The Explore Center chose to restore the mansion rather than convert it into a science museum, and it reopened to the public in 1987 as a historic house museum and event center. Today, the Bragg-Mitchell Mansion hosts weddings, receptions, parties, and corporate functions. Visitors can take guided tours of the mansion to learn about its history and see its elegant interiors. The tours are offered on the hour, Tuesday through Friday, from 10 am to 3 pm.
