Discover more about Wapama Falls

Nestled in the northwest corner of Yosemite National Park, Hetch Hetchy Valley is home to the spectacular Wapama Falls. Often referred to as "Lost Yosemite," Hetch Hetchy offers a serene escape from the crowds of Yosemite Valley. The valley was dammed in the early 1900s to create a reservoir, providing a stable water source for the San Francisco Bay Area. Wapama Falls, the valley's feature waterfall, descends approximately 1,080 feet. The falls consist of three distinct parts: a free drop, a steeply cascading stream, and a final drop down an escarpment. Fed by Falls Creek, Wapama Falls flows year-round, with peak flow occurring in the spring. During this time, the water volume can be so high that it inundates the trail bridge at the base of the falls. The 5-mile round trip hike to Wapama Falls begins at the O'Shaughnessy Dam. The trail meanders along the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, offering stunning views of the water and surrounding granite cliffs. Along the way, hikers will also pass Tueeulala Falls, another seasonal waterfall. Be aware that the trail can be rocky with some stairs. Also be aware of potential hazards such as poison oak, rattlesnakes and bears. While the O'Shaughnessy Dam has altered the landscape of Hetch Hetchy Valley, it has not diminished the beauty of Wapama Falls. The falls remain an impressive sight, drawing visitors who seek a more secluded Yosemite experience.
