Discover more about Asahi Beer Ōyamazaki Villa Museum of Art

The Asahi Beer Ōyamazaki Villa Museum of Art, located at the foot of Mt. Tennozan in Oyamazaki, Kyoto, offers a serene escape where art, history, and the natural landscape converge. The museum is housed in a villa originally built in the 1930s as the country home of Shotaro Kaga, a businessman with diverse interests, including a role in the founding of Nikka Whisky. Kaga, who had studied abroad in Europe, designed the villa influenced by the English Tudor Gothic style. After Kaga's death and a period of neglect, Asahi Breweries, with ties to Kaga, stepped in to restore the villa, transforming it into an art museum that opened in 1996. The museum not only preserves the original villa but also incorporates modern architectural elements designed by Tadao Ando, including the Underground Jewelry Box and the Dream Box annexes. These additions house a significant collection of art, including ceramics from Kanjiro Kawai and Bernard Leach, pieces from the Japanese Mingei (folk crafts) Movement, and Claude Monet's Water Lilies series. Visitors can explore the main building, wander through the gardens with water features, and enjoy views of the Katsura, Kizu, and Uji Rivers. The museum also offers a cafe with a terrace and a museum shop.
