History of Tettegouche State Park

Long before European settlers arrived, the area that is now Tettegouche State Park was home to Indigenous peoples, including the Ojibwe. These tribes utilized the land for hunting, fishing, and gathering, relying on the rich natural resources of the Lake Superior region.
In the late 1600s, French explorers and fur traders, such as Daniel Greysolon, Sieur du Lhut, ventured into the area. They established trade routes and relationships with the Indigenous tribes, exchanging European goods for valuable furs. This marked the beginning of European influence in the region.
By the late 1800s, logging became a dominant industry in northeastern Minnesota. The North Shore’s dense forests attracted timber companies, and logging camps were established in what is now Tettegouche State Park. The area’s rivers and Lake Superior were used to transport logs to mills, altering the landscape significantly.
In 1910, the Alger-Smith Lumber Company sold 5,000 acres of logged land to a group of businessmen who formed the Tettegouche Club. They built the Tettegouche Camp as a private retreat for fishing, hunting, and outdoor recreation. The club’s name, 'Tettegouche,' originated from the French phrase 'tête de cochon,' meaning 'pig’s head,' a nickname for a stubborn member of their group.
In 1971, the state of Minnesota acquired the land from the Tettegouche Club to create Tettegouche State Park. The park was established to preserve the unique natural features and historical significance of the area. It has since expanded to over 9,300 acres, offering visitors a glimpse into the region’s natural beauty and storied past.
Today, Tettegouche State Park is not only a haven for outdoor enthusiasts but also a site of cultural and historical importance. Efforts have been made to preserve the park’s historical structures, such as the Tettegouche Camp, and to educate visitors about the Indigenous, French, and logging history that shaped the region. The park stands as a testament to the diverse cultural heritage of Minnesota’s North Shore.
