Discover more about New Haven Free Public Library

The New Haven Free Public Library (NHFPL) system has been serving the city since 1887, with the Ives Memorial Library as its main branch since 1911. This iconic building, designed by architect Cass Gilbert, is located prominently on the corner of Elm and Temple Streets, facing the New Haven Green. Its neo-Georgian architectural style, featuring red brick and white marble details, harmonizes with the surrounding historic architecture. The library's history is rooted in a commitment to providing free access to information and knowledge for all New Haven residents. Mary E. Ives's generous donation of $300,000 enabled the construction of the fireproof building, which replaced earlier, smaller locations. A major renovation and expansion in 1990 modernized the facility while preserving its architectural integrity. Inside, visitors can explore a vast collection of books and resources, as well as admire the artwork on display. The Ives Gallery hosts rotating exhibits, and the main hall features notable murals, including lunettes by Bancel LaFarge depicting scenes from New Haven's history and Rip Van Winkle murals painted in 1934. The library also offers a variety of free programs and services to the public.
