Car
From Skaftafell, take the main road, Route 1 (also known as the Ring Road), heading east. Continue for about 15 kilometers until you reach the entrance to Vatnajökull National Park. Look for signs indicating the park entrance. There is a parking fee of around 1,000 ISK, so have some cash or a card ready for this. Once you park, follow the marked paths into the park.

To reach Vatnajökull National Park via public transport from Skaftafell, first visit the nearest bus stop, located on Route 1. Check the local bus schedules, as services may vary. Buses such as the Sterna or Reykjavik Excursions often have routes that include stops near the park entrance. A one-way ticket typically costs between 2,500-3,500 ISK. Once you arrive at the park entrance, walk to the designated visitor area and begin your exploration.

For those already in Skaftafell, there are several hiking trails that lead into Vatnajökull National Park. The most popular is the trail to Svartifoss, which starts near the visitor center. Follow the signs along the well-marked path. The hike takes about 1-2 hours round trip, and please wear appropriate footwear. No additional fees are required for hiking, but ensure you have water and snacks.
