Discover more about Snow Monkey Park (Jigokudani Yaen Koen)

Venture into the heart of Japan's mountainous Nagano Prefecture to witness an extraordinary sight: wild Japanese macaques, or snow monkeys, luxuriating in natural hot springs at the Jigokudani Monkey Park. Established in 1964, the park was created to provide a sanctuary for these monkeys, whose habitat was threatened by the development of ski resorts. The name Jigokudani, meaning "Hell's Valley," comes from the steam and boiling water that emerge from crevices in the frozen ground, a result of the area's geothermal activity. This rugged landscape, surrounded by steep cliffs and dense forests, sets the stage for a truly unique wildlife encounter. Today, the park is home to a troop of over 200 monkeys. They descend from the mountains to bathe in the warm waters, especially during the snowy winter months. The park features a man-made pool where the monkeys gather, providing visitors with excellent viewing opportunities. Accustomed to humans, the monkeys often ignore their observers, allowing for intimate and captivating encounters. While it's tempting to interact, visitors are prohibited from touching or feeding the monkeys. While the winter months (December to March) offer the most iconic scenes of snow-covered monkeys in steamy hot springs, the park is open year-round. Even in warmer months, the monkeys visit the park to socialize and forage, offering a chance to witness their fascinating social dynamics.
