Discover more about Snow Monkey Park (Jigokudani Yaen Koen)

Nestled in the scenic Jigokudani valley of Yamanouchi, Nagano, the Jigokudani Monkey Park, also known as the Snow Monkey Park, presents a captivating spectacle of Japanese macaques luxuriating in natural hot springs. Established in 1964 as a conservation area, the park allows visitors to observe these wild monkeys in their natural habitat without the constraints of cages or fences. The park's name, Jigokudani, translates to "Hell Valley," a testament to the area's volcanic activity, steep cliffs, and steaming hot springs. This unique environment provides a haven for the monkeys, especially during the winter months when the surrounding landscape is blanketed in snow. The monkeys, accustomed to human presence, often ignore their observers, allowing for intimate and fascinating viewing opportunities. While the park is open year-round, the winter season (December to March) offers the most iconic views, with the monkeys soaking in the onsen to escape the cold. However, the monkeys visit the park throughout the year. Visitors can also observe monkey social behaviors, such as grooming, foraging, and playful wrestling. Remember not to touch or feed the monkeys.
