Hiking
To reach Ptarmigan Tunnel, start at the Many Glacier Hotel, which is a well-known landmark in Glacier National Park. From the hotel, head towards the Many Glacier Trailhead. The trail is well-marked and begins with a climb that offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and lakes. Follow the trail for about 2.5 miles until you reach the Ptarmigan Tunnel Trail junction. At this junction, take the left fork to continue on the Ptarmigan Tunnel Trail. The trail will begin to ascend more steeply, crossing several switchbacks. Continue on this trail for approximately 1.5 miles; you will pass by stunning alpine scenery and possibly see some wildlife. As you approach the tunnel, you will see the entrance carved into the mountain. The total hike from Many Glacier Hotel to Ptarmigan Tunnel is about 4 miles one way, with an elevation gain of around 1,500 feet. Be sure to prepare with plenty of water, snacks, and a map.

If you are staying in the Many Glacier area, consider using the Glacier National Park shuttle service (if available during your visit). Check the schedule and nearest shuttle stop, usually at the Many Glacier Hotel. Take the shuttle to the Many Glacier Trailhead, where you can start your hike to Ptarmigan Tunnel as described above.
