Getting There

Hiking
If you are starting from the Apgar Visitor Center, exit the center and head west on the Trail of the Cedars. Follow the signs toward the Avalanche Lake Trailhead. This will take you through scenic forested areas with views of the nearby mountains. Continue on this trail for about 2.5 miles until you reach the junction for the McDonald Creek Trail. Turn left onto the McDonald Creek Trail and follow it for about 1 mile. Once you reach the shores of Lake McDonald, look for the N Lake McDonald Rd trailhead. Follow this road for approximately 0.5 miles until you reach the Upper Lake McDonald Ranger Station Historic District.

Starting from the Apgar Campground, you can bike along the Going-to-the-Sun Road. Take the bike path toward Lake McDonald Lodge, which is about 2 miles away. Once you reach the lodge, continue biking north along N Lake McDonald Rd for about 1.5 miles. You will see signs for the Upper Lake McDonald Ranger Station Historic District. Be cautious of traffic as you approach the ranger station.
