Getting There

Driving
From Barcelona, take the C-16 towards Puigcerdà. Continue on the N-260 towards Ribes de Freser. From Ribes de Freser, follow signs to Queralbs. In Queralbs, a dirt track leads to Fontalba (2070m), a common starting point for hiking Puigmal. Note that the dirt track is generally suitable for passenger cars but can be rough. Parking is available at Fontalba. Be aware that in peak season, the parking lot can get crowded.

Public Transport
From Barcelona, take the train to Ribes de Freser. From Ribes de Freser, take the Cremallera de Núria rack railway to Vall de Núria. This is a scenic railway that takes you high into the mountains. From Vall de Núria, several hiking trails lead to the summit of Puigmal. A return ticket on the Cremallera costs approximately €33.50.

From the parking area at Fontalba (2070m), the trail to the summit of Puigmal is a straightforward hike up a bare ridge. The path is well-defined and easy to follow. Allow approximately 3-4 hours for the ascent and 2-3 hours for the descent. Be prepared for steep sections and rocky terrain near the summit.
