Discover more about Puigmal

Puigmal stands as one of the highest peaks in the eastern Pyrenees, offering breathtaking 360-degree views of both the Spanish and French sides of the mountain range. Its location on the border between Catalonia, Spain, and France makes it a unique geographical landmark. The mountain's western slopes are characterized by smooth, easily walkable terrain due to the friable metasediments that compose them. The eastern side, however, presents a more rugged, alpine landscape with sharp crests and challenging sections. Puigmal is a favorite among hikers, with the best time to climb being during the summer months (June-September) when the weather is stable and the mountain is generally free of snow. Several trails lead to the summit, with varying levels of difficulty. Popular starting points include Vall de Núria in Spain and the former Err ski resort in France. At the summit, hikers are rewarded with stunning views and can find a metal cross and a plaque with a poem by Jacint Verdaguer. The mountain's popularity means you're likely to encounter other hikers, especially on weekends. Be prepared for changing weather conditions, even in summer, and ensure you have appropriate gear and clothing.
