Discover more about Plateau Point

Plateau Point is a stunning overlook in the Grand Canyon National Park, offering dramatic views of the Colorado River from approximately 1,300 feet above. Reaching Plateau Point requires a strenuous 12-mile round trip hike from the South Rim via the Bright Angel Trail and Plateau Point Trail. The adventure begins at the Bright Angel Trailhead in Grand Canyon Village. The well-maintained Bright Angel Trail descends steeply into the canyon, passing by the 1.5-mile and 3-mile rest houses, where water is typically available. The trail then leads to Havasupai Gardens (formerly known as Indian Garden), an oasis with lush vegetation sustained by Garden Creek. This area has a rich history, having been cultivated by the Havasupai people for centuries before their forced removal in 1928. From Havasupai Gardens, the Plateau Point Trail continues west, traversing the Tonto Platform. This relatively flat stretch offers a change of pace after the steep descent, but provides little shade. The final approach to Plateau Point leads to a fenced overlook, providing panoramic views of the Colorado River and the surrounding canyon. The effort required to reach Plateau Point is well worth it, as the views are considered among the most spectacular in the Grand Canyon. Note that access to Plateau Point is currently closed through September 30, 2025, due to construction on the Transcanyon Waterline.
