Discover more about Okochi Sanso Garden

Okochi Sanso Garden, located in the Arashiyama district of Kyoto, is a tranquil oasis that once belonged to the famous Japanese period film star Okochi Denjiro (1898-1962). The garden was personally designed and built by Okochi over 30 years, starting in 1934, with the vision of creating a timeless beauty. He poured much of his acting income into the estate. Spanning 20,000 square meters, the garden incorporates the natural scenery of Mount Arashiyama, Mount Hiei, and the Hozukyo Gorge. The garden features a variety of structures, including the Daijokaku hall, Tekisui-an teahouse, Gekko-tei, and Jibutsu-do temple hall. The Jibutsu-do, a Meiji Era building, was moved to the site at Denjiro's request and is where he would meditate. The Daijokaku showcases traditional Japanese residential architecture. The garden is designed to highlight the beauty of each season, with cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, vibrant foliage in autumn, and serene snowscapes in winter. Visitors can stroll through the meticulously planned gardens, discovering hidden Buddha statues, water features, and sculptures. The garden path leads to vantage points offering panoramic views of Kyoto. The entrance fee includes a cup of green tea and a Japanese sweet served in the teahouse, providing a moment of relaxation while enjoying the scenery. Okochi Sanso Garden offers a unique blend of natural beauty, historical architecture, and artistic vision, making it a must-see destination in Arashiyama.
